  1. FAIRY BATTLE
  2.  
  3. The fairies are battling:
  4. trumpets are shrilling,
  5. blackbeetles are neighing;
  6. the grass is aflame,
  7. Savaged with thistles,
  8. their guts lying open,
  9. young elves lie a-dying.
  10. In agony sweating,
  11. the wounded are crawling
  12. from under the hooves
  13. of the cockchafers trampling.
  14. Away on a molehill
  15. the generals are watching
  16. the battle progressing,
  17. and, squeaking and twittering,
  18. planning a charge.
